Today, Tasman Environmental Markets (TEM) accepted the Energy Globe Award for its Laos pilot Induction Cookstove project at an intimate ceremony in Sydney – taking out the national award for Laos. In a first-of-its-kind for the region, the project utilises cutting-edge e-cookstove technology to improve environmental and health issues relating to smoke inhalation in Laos and produce data-verified, Gold Standard carbon credits.
Each induction cookstove or eCookstove contributes to an estimated emissions reduction of 2.4 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per year, which totals over 163 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent across the pilot project.
In Laos, traditional cooking is often done over open fires or charcoal stoves, commonly using wood, charcoal, or gas as fuel. These methods are widespread in rural and urban households but contribute to deforestation, indoor air pollution, and health risks, particularly for women and children. Clean cooking solutions, like induction cookstoves, offer a sustainable alternative by reducing emissions, improving air quality, and easing the burden of fuel collection.
The induction cookstoves allow for high integrity, real-time monitoring of usage data via an inbuilt SIM card, ensuring accuracy. The cookstoves are 100% smoke free and reduce the risks of fires, burns and gas leaks in the home.
There to accept the award was CEO, Michaela Morris and Head of Origination, Adrian Enright.
“We are honoured to receive the Energy Globe Award for our Laos Induction Cookstove pilot project. This project represents the power innovation and carbon finance has in driving meaningful climate impact and community outcomes. By replacing traditional cooking methods with clean, efficient induction cookstoves, we are not only reducing carbon emissions but also delivering real health benefits, particularly for women and children. This award is a testament to the impact that well-designed climate solutions can achieve,” said Michaela Morris, CEO, TEM.
This is the second win for the pilot project, which was awarded Top Project of the Year at the prestigious Environment + Energy Leader Awards in 2024. The Project now looks to complete its final report with the goal of expanding to full scale implementation in the coming years.
