Organisations can now measure and offset all their travel related emissions through Serko’s travel management platform powered by Tasman Environmental Markets’ (TEM’s) emissions calculation technology, BlueHalo®. Extending the existing carbon calculation and offset solution for flights, TEM now enables Serko’s customers to calculate and offset emissions for their hotel and car bookings – the first automated solution of its kind for Australia and New Zealand.
A recent report from FCM Travel Solutions, revealed that a third of all business travellers are interested in making more sustainable choices, and yet of this group, only 26% are aware of their formal emissions reduction milestones.
“Travel-related emissions have long been a significant challenge for corporates, often creating complexities in carbon accounting and sustainability reporting. With BlueHalo’s integration, businesses can now access more accurate, auditable travel emissions data – eliminating a major pain point.
Furthermore, this new integrated feature will allow Serko customers to choose more sustainable hotel and car offerings and compensate these emissions through high integrity carbon projects in line with corporate climate targets – all in one place. It’s a game changer.” said Michela Morris, CEO, TEM.
The emission data and offset functionality is now available to all Zeno by Serko (and their white labelled version, Savi) customers, which includes the option to prioritise more sustainable choices when booking. This makes it easier for corporate travellers to select lower-emission hotels and hybrid or electric vehicles along with lower impact flight options to complete their corporate travel itineraries significantly improving the ability to reduce emissions at source. Once their travel is complete, Serko customers can then use the emissions calculations from BlueHalo® to easily compensate their footprint against one of TEM’s high-integrity climate action project portfolios.
Zeno’s offering powered by TEM’s BlueHalo® technology is currently used by a number of major travel management companies, including Orbit Travel, FCM, CT Connections, Executive Travel Management, Globetrotter and Platinum Travel.
“Adding hotel and car emissions calculations with TEM is an important step for us to offer our customers a comprehensive and integrated way for them to address their environmental impact,” said Jo Phipps, Serko’s VP of Product.
TEM’s BlueHalo® emissions calculation API technology seamlessly integrates with Zeno by Serko, meaning that there is no longer a need for companies to manually track their emissions data, ensuring accuracy when it comes time to report. Knowing the true travel emissions volume makes it easier for customers to actively address it by supporting a TEM portfolio of national and/or international carbon projects.
“Orbit is pleased to now be able to offer our customers this next level of sustainability transparency when booking hotels and car rentals via Orbit Online, powered by Zeno. We’re proud that we can now deliver this to our customers through our strong partnership with Serko,” said Anna Marshall, Sustainability Programme Manager, Orbit World Travel Group.
TEM sources and manages a number of high impact carbon offset and biodiversity projects from around the world spanning renewable energy, forest regeneration and community-driven initiatives. Each project undergoes extensive due diligence by TEM and a rigorous accreditation process through a third-party verifier to ensure it delivers real and lasting benefits for communities and their environments.
For current Zeno by Serko customers all they need to do is contact the BlueHalo® team to opt in to this new full travel emissions integration and any new Zeno customers will be offered the complete flight, hotel and car emissions calculation offering at time of onboarding.
